NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

What’s next after high school?

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

Terrigal versed Erindale today in a match filled with school spirit, sportsmanship and good old fashioned fun. As a school, Terrigal High attended the match to cheer our boys on and show our school spirit. We are so proud of our boys for their excellent match with their formidable opponents. While they didn't walk away the winners this time, they certainly demonstrated how to play as professionals and take a loss with grace. Well done one and all!

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

For more information, contact Service NSW on 137 788 or creativekids@service.nsw.gov.au.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

Videos for Change

We know young people have a lot to say about the social issues that affect them, but they are often not given the opportunity to be heard. Videos for Change provides a platform to amplify their voice to an international audience, with last year's winning videos reaching more than 600,000 people in 91 countries.

Videos for Change is a real-world, student-led, project-based learning experience that empowers high school students to be advocates of social change. Students create one-minute videos to inspire others to take action on a social issue they are passionate about. This engaging learning experience allows students to develop the critical global competencies needed to be active, responsible and engaged citizens and can be delivered as a unit of work, part of a wellbeing program or simply used as an assessment item across multiple subject areas.

Participants in Videos for Change can also enter the national competition which can amplify students’ voice to a global audience. The 2019 competition will be open for submissions from 24 June - 13 September and award categories include, Junior High, Senior High, People's Choice and Indigenous Youth Voice. The winning videos will receive a share of $12,000 of prizes and have the chance to be featured on Network 10's The Project.

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

WIN (Writing Improvement Now) term 4 2018 winners

Throughout Term 4, teachers have been collecting samples of student writing produced in their classrooms. Teachers then nominate their students’ best efforts to the WIN team who read all the entries and select the best scripts. Entries were judged across year groups and courses in the junior school. The entries were judged on their cohesion, sentence structure, spelling, punctuation, grammar and how well they addressed the task.

After a long judging process the Term 4 winners were decided. They are as follows:

Year 7 - Kai Avis – Visual Arts

Year 8 – Yalani Mead - HSIE

Year 9 – Grace Liew – Science

Year 10 – Isabella Goodwin – Dance

A short excerpt from each of the student’s work reveals the high quality of writing produced.

Year 7 Kai Avis – Visual Arts

As I stepped out of the door from my house, I instantly felt the warm air cover me. I started to walk down the stairs. As I stepped out of the shadow from my house, I squinted as my eyes adjusted to the bright light. Even more warm air blanketed me as I could feel the rough sand beneath my feet.

Year 8 – Yalani Mead - HSIE

It’s been a long time since we last saw our home land Hawaiki and I don’t know how much longer it will be till we reach land. Every morning I wake up and walk around my boat and collect all the lifeless people that gave up overnight. We’ve lost over half our tribe from running out of water and food and the rest of us are holding on by a thread. I am just about to give up hope before my wife yells out, ‘Look. Over there. There’s a long white cloud and beneath, I see land!’

Year 9 – Grace Liew – Science

Wind gushed past my fair-skinned face as I tugged my small wooden boat up to the island. As I finished tying my boat against a shed, the sirens blared in my ears a warning of a tsunami. I saw people running outside from their homes and hotels. I heard the screams of ‘RUN! RUN!” I looked back behind me, towards the ocean and witnessed the furious water rushing towards the island.

Year 10 – Isabella Goodwin – Dance

Tying together exceptional choreography and an outstanding accompaniment are the creative costume designs by Bruce’s wife, Marian Bruce. Throughout the whole piece, the most prevalent colour is red. There is an emphasis on this colour as it can be related to many emotions such as love, anger, hate, passion and lust; all of which are evident in relationships.

When dealing with the 1960s the issues and social behaviour at the time are reflected in the use of red as it was a time of passion, free love and a lot of hate and anger towards the government concerning the war and other events.

Year 10 Illuminate Nextgen Challenge

Last week our Year 10 students completed the Illuminate Nextgen Business Challenge. This enabled our students to deepen their understanding of the business world whilst developing the entrepreneurial spirit and 21st century employment skills required to prosper in their world beyond school - collaboration, communication, coachability, commitment, creativity and critical thinking.

In teams of approximately 8-9 students, all 20 teams had to collaborate and complete a number of challenges by very strict deadlines throughout the week, as well attend a number of lectures delivered by business people. They were provided with some background information about our harrowing health statistics on the Central Coast and teams had to come up with a plausible business idea which would help deal with some of the health issues. Some of the challenges included:

1. Submitting a 'Business Model Canvas'

2. Presenting their idea early on to a panel of local business people which aimed to offer teams support to improve their ideas.

3. Presenting an 'elevator pitch' - where students had to 'sell' their idea in 30 seconds.

4. Submitting a Market Research Report.

5. Submitting a Draft Business Plan giving students an opportunity for valuable feedback in preparation for their final submission

6. Preparing Finance Statements for their business including a Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss Statement.

7. Submitting a Marketing Package including a mix of promotional materials (social media, radio advertisement etc)

8. Submitting a final Business Plan.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

Doing it for the farmers

Wow! We have had a lot of rain in the last few weeks. Our ground is soggy and our umbrellas have had a workout. But out beautiful country and its weather is nothing if not ironic and much of the rain we have experienced over the holidays did not fall where it was needed most.

A big thank you to our whole school community for the support of our fundraising and food drive activities last term. We have personally helped communities in Singleton, Tamworth, Tambar Springs, Mudgee, Burthust, Orange, Dubbo, and Inverell. Our hard work has been appreciated by many different families on the land - our Aussie legend farmers.

However, they continue to need our help and support as the drought continues to bite in many regional areas of our state.

Starting next week (week 2), we will continue our "Doing it for the farmers" drive to collect food and toiletries, water and pet food items to be transported out to those in crisis due to the drought. Last term the response from our staff, students and parents, as well as the wider community, was overwhelming! We need to keep the momentum going. Severel wonderful parents have already contacted me and offered to use trailers to transport goods out to regional communities.

Thank you so much for your involvement.

Leading into Christmas will be an especially difficult and changing time for our farmers and their communities. We have already collected new toys, books, children's clothing and luxury toiletries to make up special Christmas packs. We will hold some special drives closer to the holidays to ask for donations of treats and holidays items for our Christmas packs, so keep looking for when these drives will take place.

Again, thank you so much for supporting this initiative. It has highlighted what a generous and wonderful school community we have. Terrigal is indeed a truly special place to work and live.

Thank you,

Mrs Kellie McMartin

HSC survival tips

We know our Year 12 students may be feeling stressed as they head towards the pointy end of the school year. Support from their family and a little extra planning in the lead-up to the HSC exams goes a long way to helping our students thrive.

Tips for students

To help students tackle their exams and to manage stress levels, the department have put together some tips on our website. Share the HSC help for students section with your teens so they can survive and thrive during the HSC.

You can:

hear advice from past students to find out how they coped with the HSC

read tips on how students can manage their time during the exam.

Help for parents and carers

It can be difficult for parents and carers to navigate this tricky time in their child’s life. Sometimes it can feel like you too are going through the HSC! A healthy mind and a healthy body go hand in hand to help your child succeed.

Read HSC help for parents and carers for some ideas on how you can best support and encourage your child during the HSC.

Video – HSC advice from former students

Duration – 1:03

Watch this video to hear HSC advice from recent Year 12 graduates.

Video transcript

Text

If you were to do the HSC again what would you do differently?

Sharon

If I was to do the HSC again I would probably be more organised.

Janice

Probably do more past papers instead of writing notes. That way I get more practice on what kind of questions would be in the exam.

Hanalei

When I got my ATAR and I was really happy with it I was like damn. If I had known that or if someone had told me then I think I would've been like a lot more calm and I probably would've done better as well.

Sharon

To someone who is about to sit their HSC exams my best advice to you I guess is to breathe.

Janice

Don't stress way too much. There's always different pathways to do what you want to do.

Hanalei

Going over the dot points of the syllabus.

Jeremy

I didn't do amazing in my HSC. I did fine. I probably didn't do as well as I should have. But it really didn't close as many doors as I think a lot of people think that it might.

James

Yes it may reflect you know your academic abilities and the effort that you put in. But ultimately your success and your happiness is determined by yourself and what you want to get out of life.

End of transcript.

NSW students in record attempt to highlight mental fitness

The NSW Department of Education attempt is expected to see more than 2,000 Year 9 and 10 students from 50 schools across the state participate in an interactive 40-minute lesson designed to develop resilience in young people.

The record attempt will be held on Friday, 9 November. The current title was set in the United Kingdom in June this year with 857 people in attendance.

Mark Scott, Secretary of the NSW Department of Education, said the world record attempt aimed to promote the importance of positive mental health education and showcase the department’s commitment to this important issue.

“This mental health lesson has been designed to give students the resilience and skills they need to cope with stressful situations while letting them know it’s OK to ask for help,” Mr Scott said.

“Mental fitness is appropriate to people of all ages and is just as important as our physical health, because it helps improve mindfulness, enhance resilience and build optimism.

“Being mentally fit doesn’t mean things won’t go wrong, but the more mentally fit we are, the better we are at coping with life’s challenges and enjoying life.”

The Largest Mental Health Awareness Lesson has been developed in partnership with teachers and leading mental health and youth organisations, in line with the new K-10 PDHPE syllabus.

The lesson – which will also be livestreamed to more than 7,200 students from 80 schools across NSW – aims to increase student confidence in seeking help and helping others, improve their ability to talk about mental wellbeing, and enhance awareness of how to maintain mental fitness.

The Largest Mental Health lesson will be taught by staff from headspace and the NSW Department of Education. It will include entertainment from student and celebrity performers, such as singer Jai Waetford and TV presenter and health coach, Olivia Phyland.

Visit the World's Largest Mental Health Awareness Lessonwebpage for more details.
